Life cycle costs play a significant role in the rail industry. In particular, railway operators need to continuously optimise component and equipment operating costs. With its multitude of lubricants specially developed for the railway industry, Klüber Lubrication can help to extend oil change and relubrication intervals and increase the service life of components, thus reducing operating costs. Klüber Lubrication is showcasing its latest developments at the InnoTrans.
"Our guiding principle for development is always to conceive lubricants that allow components to have a significantly longer availability," explains Thomas Kamprath, Market Manager Rail Industry at Klüber Lubrication. "Our lubricants achieve relubrication intervals which are often twice as long as comparable competitor samples. Klüber Lubrication pushes the limits of what is possible."
Quickly applied, long-lasting
Challenges in the rail industry include door malfunctions, one of the main causes of train delays. The new BARRIERTA L 25 DL DISPERS has been specially developed for lubricating seals and washers on train doors. Based on the tried-and-tested BARRIERTA L 25 DL, this new lubricant is significantly more effective on application, reducing layer thickness on the seal surface by up to 50 %. This provides savings both on working times and cost of materials.
Prevents curve squeals
Adhesion, water resistance and effective spraying are key performance criteria for wheel flange lubricants. These characteristics are required to ensure that the lubricant is not flung outwards from the wheel at high speed or washed away by the rain, and that delivers its full performance, even at high ambient temperatures. The new Klüberrail ALE 92-2000 has been specially optimised for regions with high temperatures and for strong vibrations. This eco-friendly synthetic fluid grease is effective in reducing curve squeals and wear between the wheel and rails.
Halve the number of oil change intervals – optimise friction coefficients
When it comes to Klüber Lubrication gear oils, the focus is on the Klübersynth LEG 4 75 W 90 gear oil, specially developed for railway systems. This oil can be used to reduce the friction coefficient in transmissions by up to 30 %. The low-temperature train gear oil not only proves to be strong at temperatures down to –60 °C, but also delivers its full performance capacity at an oil sump temperature of 100 °C.
The innovative solutions that Klüber Lubrication offers the rail industry also include the tried-and-tested fully synthetic Klübersynth GE 4 75 W 90. It provides effective protection to gear components in rail vehicles. What makes this gear oil so special, though, is its chemical composition, which offers extensive oxidation stability and shear strength. This means that time-consuming oil change intervals can be considerably extended and trains are thus available for operation longer.
A million kilometres without relubrication
Klübersynth BHP 72-102 represents a milestone in lubricant development as a highly-efficient grease for traction motor bearings. In a joint project with Karlsruhe transport authorities, we managed to prove that relubrication intervals of a million kilometres or more are possible. Reaching this result allowed vehicle availability to be increased by 300 %, while costs for maintenance and repair were significantly reduced.
